Peter Andruski
Peter sincerely believes that individuals managing mental health and addiction issues can achieve recovery, live meaningful lives and be positive, contributing members of their communities. The challenge is not necessarily understanding what the individual is capable of, but more, understanding the support necessary for the individual to be successful in their recovery.
As the stepfather of a 23 year old man recovering from Schizophrenia, Peter has been involved in the justice and mental health systems for approximately 6 years. He, his wife and stepson have been clients of numerous services provided by communityorganizations and care facilities in Toronto, Halton and Peel.
With his son progressing well in his recovery, Peter has volunteered to help family members cope with the significant life changes that occur when mental health issues affect a person. He has spoken to indivduals and organizations about the fact that recovery is possible and facilitated educational groups for family members to provide them with coping techniques.
Peter contributes his time and energy as a committee member for Mississauga Halton LHIN, the Family Early Intervention Network and the Toronto Early Intervention Network. He has taken courses from Family Outreach and Response, First Episode LEARN (Learning Employment Advocacy Recreation Network) and the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario. He undertakes much of this volunteer work along with his wife and with the support of their son.
