Widening the Lens on Peer Support

Peer Support Alliance emerges from Widening the Lens on Peer Support Event!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead

On October 28th and 29th 2008 in Hamilton, Ontario, our mental health community gathered to listen, learn and rally!

Over 100 providers within peer roles and providers keen to learn how to engage peers in meaningful roles within mental health services listened as Fiona, Greg, Deb, Lyn, Moira, Belinda and Linda, described innovative peer support projects within an Ontario Mental Health Centre, a Canadian Mental Health Association, the Ontario Peer Development Initiative, Boston, Massachusetts and Glasgow, Scotland.

The 80 participants who joined us for the hands on Peer Support workshop on Day 02 were introduced to a Continuum of Consumer Involvement.  They were encouraged to consider where their organization fell on the continuum and to challenge themselves as they determined how they could more meaningfully involve consumers in their organization over the next year.

At the conclusion of the event, Paul Sanderson, a Peer Specialist, led the charge and his gathered list of participant names formed the beginnings of a Peer Support Alliance

Participants traveled from coast (Abbotsford BC) to coast (Sydney NS). From Thunder Bay, Kingston and many points in between.  The gamut of mental health services was represented in the room including consumer survivor initiatives, housing, clubhouse and assertive community treatment teams.  Representatives from FCMHS, WOTCH, WENDAT, LOFT,  COTA Health, Homestead, CMHA’s, Mental Health Centres as well as General Hospital settings were there too.

"ACUMEN is an organisation led by mental health service users and carers. We try hard to get a message of hope to those who are in the midst of crisis and to those who provide services. Christine stands alongside us in our struggle to promote the idea and the reality of recovery. She brings her quiet authority, founded on many years of experience and learning, and an absolute conviction of the likelihood of recovery.
